Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21
Revenge is a dish best served cold may be the worst advice that anyone has ever given. Like many things, it sounds good if you say it real fast and don’t think about it. To serve revenge cold, the first thing you have to do is take it very personally. When we take things personally, we carry them with us and make them a part of us. That is the last thing we should do when we have been offended. Secondly, to serve revenge cold, you have to keep thinking about it. Long after whatever happened has happened, you have to keep thinking about it to remember to serve revenge cold. Finally, there is no such thing as good revenge. Revenge starts a cycle that ultimately leads to the destruction of both parties. Yet the saying keeps being repeated.
If we are honest, the phrase keeps being repeated because when we have been wronged, we want the person who hurt us to feel the pain that we are feeling. We want the scales of justice to be balanced by giving back to them what they gave to us. There is only one problem, that is not how hurt works. Hurting someone else does not take away your hurt. All hurting someone does is bring you down to their level, and that is the last thing that you should want for you.
Friends, when you are wronged, don’t return evil for evil. The only way to overcome evil is with good. If you saw a fire burning, you wouldn’t throw more fire on it, you would throw water on it. Overcoming does not mean adding to something and making it larger later. Overcoming means that you have succeeded in dealing with something and not allowing it to be your master. No matter how you have been wronged, don’t get them back, overcome, and get past it.
