A Word every day to get you on your way!
Here is the Daily Dose for Thursday, December 12, 2019.
Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle, you will be standing firm. Ephesians 6:13
You Need It All
One of the highlights of my time in high school was being on the football team. To be honest, I got a late start with football. Unlike many people who play high school football, I didn’t play peewee football or Pop Warner. The first time I played at an organized level was as a freshman in high school, so there was a little bit of a learning curve for me. It all started when the coach took me into the equipment room. There was stuff everywhere and the coach just kept handing me stuff. There were large pads, small pads, girdles to put the pads on and in. There were pads that covered your ribs. There were pads that covered your thighs. Most surprisingly to me was the tail bone pad to protect your butt. So I had to ask the coach, “Do I really need all of this stuff?”
The Coach looked at me with a confused look. Emboldened, I said, all of this stuff is going to weigh me down and I won’t be able to play as well. That is when I realized that high school football coaches are not always the people to ask what they consider silly questions. But it was my first day so he was kind. He took the time to walk through every piece of equipment, tell me what they were for, how to wear them, and what exactly they protected. Then he said, “You don’t have to wear any of this stuff. You can that your fast self out there in cleats and a jersey, but you will be the person who gets to take the free ride to the hospital when you get hit. The pads are there for your protection. Now go run 10 laps.”
Friends, in the game of life, like in football, you have to wear the necessary equipment for the game. If you don’t wear the correct equipment, you put yourself in danger of getting unnecessarily hurt. For the battles of life, God hands you, a belt of truth to wear so that you will be able to know the truth from lies. God also hands you the breastplate of his righteousness to protect your heart so that you will not be led into unrighteousness or depend on your righteousness. He also hands you shoes of the gospel of peace so that everywhere you walk, you will walk in steps of peace. God also gives you the shield of faith so that you can withstand the attacks that will inevitably come your way. Finally, he gives you the helmet of salvation to protect your mind and the sword of the word of God so that you will always have something to attack the enemy with. So, friends, it is a lot, but you need all of your equipment so that you can not only survive but win the battles of life.
