He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. Psalm 23:2A Happy Place

As a native of New York City, I am used to the noise. I am used to police car sirens at all times of the night. I am used to traffic speeding by and horns honking into the wee hours. I am used to summer block parties that turn into all-night affairs. The noise was the literal soundtrack to my life. It is because of this that I can sleep through almost anything. Thunderstorm, lightning, arguing in the apartment next door, none of it gets in the way of a good night’s sleep for me. While I am used to noise and can sleep through anything, there are times that even I want to get away to somewhere that is a quiet place so that I can actually relax.

While I am used to noise, and it doesn’t bother me, all of us need some peace and quiet from time to time. We were not created to live on “10” at all times. We need someplace where we can go, wind down, disconnect and be at peace for a little while. This is what the psalmist was talking about when he said, “He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.” Many of us can be so dedicated to our work, our families and life in general that we forget to take a moment to slow down. It is because of this that God will sometimes make us lie down in a still quiet place. God will make us take some time to just relax disconnect, and be still. You see it is in the stillness that we connect with the real us and our God. It is in the stillness that we don’t have to work, perform, or produce and we get to for a few minutes just be. Just be a person. Just be quiet. Just be still. Just be ourselves. Just be all the things that we can’t be in the constant hustle and bustle of a 24-hour connected world.

Friends, when was the last time you were in a green pasture beside still waters? No, I don’t mean the last time you took a vacation, many of us have turned those into second jobs instead of breaks. What I am talking about is the last time you disconnected and got to your happy place. That place where you turn off the phone, stop thinking about the cares of the world and just took a minute to be. All of us need to find a happy place. A place where there is stillness is peace and is tranquility where we can just be. All of us need that place where we can escape for a little while. That place where we can connect with ourselves, connect with God, and for a little while, just be. You’re not too busy. You don’t have too much to do. Find some time to get to your happy place.

Be Blessed,

Rev
