Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave them the right to become children of God. John 1:12
You will never fully understand being a parent unless you become one. I always thought that was an exaggeration until I became a parent. You see for years I held the titles of greatest “Uncle Ever” and “Most Awesome Godfather in Existence”. With these titles, I thought I knew what it was like to be a parent. I had kept, watched, entertained and cared for multiple nieces, nephews, and god children, so I assumed that I knew and understood parenting. I assumed that if I could do it for a few hours or a few days, that being a parent would be just more of the same. I was so incredibly wrong. After having a child of my own I wanted to go the parents of my nieces, nephews and god children and give them a hug and apologize for even thinking that I could do what they were doing.
What I failed to realize as temporary caregiver and guardian is the immense gulf between the words temporary and permanent. I thought it was just a time consideration, but it is so much more. Being a parent is a full time, permanent, ongoing, never-ending marathon of love, care, and worry. It is giving someone else permanent and ongoing residence in your mind, heart, and emotions. It is thinking about them every minute of every day, always wanting the best for them, trying to keep them from harm, and wanting them to never feel pain. That is not something that you can do on and off. That is something that is all-consuming and it is called being a parent.
That is what God does for us through Jesus when we become children of God. When you become a believer in Jesus you become a child of God. God doesn’t become our favorite uncle or the best Godfather ever, He takes us on and takes us in as his children. We gain permanent access and permanent residence in the mind of God because he is our father. There is never a time that God is not thinking of you, concerned for you or wanting the best for you. There is never a time that you are so far away that God forgets about you or stops caring for you. So as you go through your day today, and every day, know that your father cares for you.
