The Daily Dose with Dr. Daryl L. Williams

A Word every day to get you on your way!

Here is the Daily Dose for Tuesday, June 4, 2019.

Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless – like chasing the wind. Ecclesiastes 4:4

There is an old saying that people are trying to keep up with the Jones. The idea is that nobody wants to have less than the people around them, so they do all sorts of things to keep up with their neighbors. For some people, “keeping up” has become the reason for their being. They have decided that life is a game and the only way to win is to make sure that you have as much as the folks next door. So you begin to look for jobs based on keeping up with the neighbors. You create a lifestyle based on keeping up with the neighbors. Everything you do is carefully designed to make sure that you are not falling behind the folks next door. There’s just one issue; now you’re not living your life, you are trapped in trying to keep up with their life.

When I meet people who are successful and miserable, I always ask them, “Are you trapped?” What I am getting at is, do you have things or do your things have you? Many times people are trapped in lives that they don’t want so they can pay for a lifestyle that will impress others. We see this with people who hate going to work every day, but the lifestyle that they built demands that they show up. They would rather be doing something more fulfilling, or that has a greater impact on society, but fulfillment and impact don’t pay the bills. So they show up every day unmotivated, infuriated and wanting to do anything but be here. The problem is the stuff they have has them trapped in a life they don’t want.

Friends, I want you to be truly free. Freedom means basing your life and your ambition on what God is calling you to do, not what will finance your competition with your neighbors. When you start to live a life based on what God is calling you to do, what your neighbor has starts to matter less and less to you. What begins to matter is are you fulfilling your purpose and your destiny. You stop looking at the things that you are accumulating in life, and you start looking at the impact that your life is having on the world around you. So take a minute today to make sure that you are living your best life, not trapped in competition with people down the street who don’t care what you have.

Be Blessed,
