Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on fighting. Proverbs 20:3
It Really Is Up To You
I’m grown, I can do what I want to do. These are famous words that many of us have said, thought or heard at some point. We believe that we are big enough, grown enough, and old enough that we don’t have to be subject to what other people say any more. We can stay up as late as we want, because we are grown. We can go where we want to, because we are grown. We can have the friends we want, spend money how we want, and do whatever we want to, because we are good and grown. Being grown gives us choice, it gives us agency but it also gives us responsibility. That is why I am amazed when I see grown people who stay in the midst of fighting and foolishness.
Now some will say, but you have to understand my situation before you judge it. Not really, if you are grown enough to make choices, then you have to realize that everything is a choice. You choose how late you want to stay up. You choose who you want to hang out with. You choose what situations and what fights you will and will not be involved in. You see, being grown means that you have to make choices every day. If you are always in the midst of fussing, fighting and foolishness, then you have to realize that you are choosing to be there. IF you are choosing to be there, then you can also choose to leave it behind, after all you’re grown remember.
Today, take a good look around. Are you involved in the things that you want to be involved in? Do you have the relationships that you want to have? If the answer is yes, great, if not then do something about it. As a grown up, you don’t have to be in fights you don’t want to be in. You don’t have to deal excessively with people you don’t want to deal with. What you do have to do is choose to stay or go. If you insist on staying then remember it was a choice. If you choose to move on to better things than you will indeed have better things. Either way, you’re grown and it really is up to you.
