Put Some Respect on His Name

There are a lot of people who are uncomfortable with the notion of the fear of the Lord. They wonder, if God is so good, and God is so righteous, why would I need to fear Him. What people often miss is that fear is not a bad thing. A part of fear comes from a healthy level of respect. You see, when we understand something it is sometimes right to fear it out of respect for it. Let me give you an example.

One day, I went to a car dealership to test drive a car. I met a very nice salesman who told me everything I needed to know about the vehicle. We went over all the specs, all the color combinations, all the features and even the pricing. I was very impressed, but I wanted to go on a test drive. He agreed, but as we walked out to the car, cautioned me that his car was not like other cars. As we walked he explained to me that this car was very powerful and had to be driven with great care. The nature of the engine and the transmission made this car very fast, and very responsive, so I needed to take great care with how I drove it. From the time I started the car and heard the growl of the engine, I knew it was different and I was very careful with how I drove the entire time. Knowing what the car could do, I was very careful and respectful of it as I drove it. And it was AWESOME.

So how does the relate to God. We often can forget that God is an AWESOME God. This is the God that controls the universe. This is the God that out of nothing made everything that exists. This is the God that controls the winds, the storms, and the seas. The God who in the blink of an eye could destroy and remake the earth at His will. He is all-knowing, all-seeing and all-powerful with all things under His control. When you know this about God, then you have good judgement when dealing with Him. You know that He loves you, cares for you, but He is so powerful that he deserves your fear and respect. So remember, you don’t have to fear God as one who has done something wrong, but it is smart to respect God because he does all things right.

Be Blessed,

Rev
